Leadership – Jump in the Fire

There are so many elements to leadership that can be covered in a course like Developing Leadership at Georgian. Below is a map of the course content I can’t say that I am an expert in mapping but I gave it the “old college try”!

I love the course, and I love teaching it. However, in sifting through all of that content – one important point always stands out:

That is – learning about Leadership can’t and doesn’t happen JUST in the classroom.

Leadership is fluid – always changing, based on experiences in your life that happen every day, the people you meet and who impact you for the better and worse. There are important skills and concepts that Leaders can and should learn about in the classroom, but more often than not, Leaders learn to lead in the fire.

They jump in – sometimes without looking. They get burned – but they heal in time. And when they have success the fire gets smaller and smaller until eventually, they are left with a small flame. The flame can still burn them, but it will take less time to heal, they know what to do to treat the burn, and there will likely be people they trust pushing them to jump back in.

Discovering leadership in the classroom can get your suited up, but experience and practice will help you battle the fire.
